David Lewis Gallery began a new public-facing chapter with its move into a two-story, street-level space on Walker Street. 92 feet in length and 16 feet in height, the gallery’s new space presented a challenge in its tall and skinny proportions, requiring a subdivision into more square-like spaces to view art.
BoND introduced two new partitions in the space, built as solid surfaces up to a height of 11 feet and translucent above, using sheets of opal polycarbonate. A continuous lighting field of fluorescent lights emphasized a new height datum in the space, matching that of the walls at 11 feet above the ground. Sticking to a minimal material palette, BoND design a custom reception desk made of stainless steel that was manufactured in nearby Chinatown, as well as a wood-top table for the viewing room in the back of the gallery.
